Big group off to Joey Calzone meet

On Friday of this week a group of 36 swimmers from SLSC will be going to Sault Ste Marie for the Joey Calzone meet.  The bus is leaving from the University at 12:00 noon SHARP!  Pre-boarding the bus will start at 11:30 am.  Please see the link below for entries for this meet.  If you not on this list it is for one fo 2 reasons #1 You were not invited or #2 you indicated through email that you were not attending the meet.  Have a great week of preparation and see you on the bus.

SLSC Swimmers take show on the Road

    This past weekend saw 10 swimmers from SLSC attend the Harvest Invitational in  Etobicoke.  The swimmers were competing against some of the best swimmers in Southern Ontario and performed at a very high level.  Top 8 performances were done by Justin Burton-McCarthy,  Brenna Eastick,  and Spencer Hirschfeld.   Top 3 finishers included Kelly Hotta, Justin LeClair and Jacob Toner.   Other siwmmers going to the competition and attaining best times in quite a few events include Colin Hirschfeld, Tori Jewell, Tessa Jewell and Sarah Tkachuk.  Some great personal breakthroughs were attained this weekend and the whole group is off to Sault St Marie this coming weekend to  attend the Joey Calzones meet  with a number of other  SLSC swimmers.   See the link below for complet team results from the Harvest Invite.

Flu Season is Here!

If you have not noticed it has been a particularly bad season for Flu like illnesses.  The last week or so has seen a dramatic increase in the number of sick kids at school and even adults at work.  There should be some common sense thrown in with some precaution when figuring out what to do about the flu season.  First of all, if you are sick. please stay home.  Secondly, if you are not sick then live your life normally (With some precautions). Wash your hands more often, DON'T share water bottles or other equipment.  We are a bit less at risk at the pool considering the amount of chlorine in the water and such. There are risks in other areas though.  For that reason, as a precaution, the senior swimmers will stay out of the weight room for a this week.

So please remember.. if you are sick, stay home.  If you are not sick come on out to practice.

Great Start to the 2009-10 Racing Season

The Sudbury Laurentian Swim Club started the Year with a bang this past weekend.  SLSC hosted the first NEOR Development meet of the season and made a stamp early.  The club swam to 77% best ever times, which is a great start to the year.  We also had numerous swimmers finish with top 8 placings.  Congratulations to all of the swimmers and coaches for a great start to the season and lets keep on getting even better!  Look on this website for a complete set of results for SLSC.

2009 NEOR Developmental 1 - meet info

For those looking for info on the NEOR Dev 1 swim meet in Sudbury on October 24-25, 2009 here ya go...

The pool is located on Athletic Building Road at Laurentian University.  Click the link for a Google Map.  While some parking is available near the pool, ample parking is available in Lot 11.  Refer to the Campus Map.

Preliminary session times are as follows. Warm-up is one hour long and is the hour prior to the start-time.  End times are unknown (currently as I post this). The meet is Short Course (25 m).

• Saturday 2:30 pm
• Sunday 9:00 am

The meet package is available on the swimming.ca website. The meet package includes a bunch of hotels in-and-around the area.

Coach and Parent meetings

Hello every one.  One  of the goals this season is to keep the parents in the loop and informed on a group to group level as much as possible. To get the ball started we will be running individual group parent meetings next week.  Please see the meeting dates below so you can adjust your schedules to be at the appropriate meetings. We are scheduling the meetings after practices and they should not run longer than 20 minutes or so. The meetings will give you a chance to hear from the coaches what the short term plans are, a brief rundown of competition schedules and a question/answer period if you have any.   All meetings will be in the Banuk Lounge at

• Group 1 - Monday October 19 6:00 pm
• Group 2 - Monday October 19 6:30 pm

Hello everyone,
 
Welcome back to another season of swimming.  It's good to see all the familiar and some new faces at the pool.  For the new families my name is Rob Whipple and my partner John MacLean and I are the SLSC Officials Co-Chairs - which means we are the 2 guys who "find" "volunteers" to run swim meets.  We also do a few other things.
 
The hyperlinks below will direct you to polls set up in doodle.com.  Just enter your name on the left and scroll across to the session/deep or shallow/lane you want and click on the box.  It will turn green when you check it.  If the maximum number of timers (3) are already signed up for a particular lane you won't be able to check the box.  If you are a Head Lane Timer please put HLT after your name and pick Lanes 2 or 4 or 6.  These polls provide a way for swim parents "volunteers" to sign up for officiating duties during swim meets.  If you are a new member you can sign up to do a timers job.  The other jobs require some training and John or myself would be happy to help you get the training.
 
The meet is 2 sessions: Saturday afternoon (1:30 warm-up 2:30 start) and Sunday morning (8:00 warm-up 9:00 start).  The pool will have the bulkhead in the middle meaning it is a short course event - deep and shallow ends will be running races simultaneously.  Officials meets 30 minutes prior to start.
 
For those who want to be Timers and Head Lane Timers (HLT) at this meet please click on the following hyperlink.  We need 3 timers per lane.  Just a note - a referee will not start a session until she/he has sufficient number of timers in place.

Officials needed - Varsity meet October 31 and Nov 1st

Timers are required for the Varsity swim meet to be held at the Jeno Tihanyi Olympic Gold Pool.  The meet is Oct 31-Nov. 1.  The sessions for this meet should be approx. 2 hours.

Saturday Oct 31 warmup at 4:00 with a start time of 5:00

Sunday Nov 1 warmup at 9:00 with a start time of 10:00

Thanksgiving schedule

4. Love and accept your child unconditionally. Criticize the act, not your swimmer.
5. Let your child own his swimming. It is his swimming, not yours.
6. Make a contribution. Support the team.
7. Make swimming a collaborative pursuit between swimmer, coach, and parent.
8. Let the coach coach.
9. Demonstrate your value for competitive swimming excellence. Encourage your swimmer to play to win, but remember it is just a game whereby most of the value steams from playing to win, not from having won.
10. Tell your swimmer to HAVE FUN.
